is the archive of the Swiss Society for Railway History SGEG with stocks from private sources and important photo archives of the Swiss rolling stock industry.
Just in time for the winter solstice, bahnarchiv.ch is back after an interruption of almost two years. Since 22 December 2022, the online archive of the SGEG is freely accessible again. While the previous version was limited to an image database, archiving software is now available that allows the indexing of all archive records.
With the Swiss provider Kränzle & Ritter, we have found a partner who not only supports us with its ANTON application, but also shares our passion for rail transport. With ANTON, we have a web-based, standard-oriented archive database at our disposal with which photographs and written material can be accessed and communicated in an equally professional manner. In the future, it will also be possible to search for pictures that have been recorded but not (yet) digitized.
We are starting with previously unpublished photos, only small parts of which have been described. However, the structure of the archive catalogue allows for a targeted search. And many photographs speak for themselves even without the still missing description. The previously published photos will follow at a later date, after they have been adapted to the new structure.
The offer in bahnarchiv.ch will be continuously supplemented and expanded. In the final state, the entire holdings of the SGEG will be searchable. The archive is run exclusively by members working on a voluntary basis. Accordingly, resources are limited, which has a direct influence on the indexing work.
We therefore ask for your understanding that we can only consider requests for non-digitized archive material from publishers and researchers as well as from commercial users against a fee. The digital offerings, on the other hand, are available to all interested parties, and copies can also be ordered for private use for a small fee.
After just over a year, bahnarchiv.ch has grown considerably. At the turn of the year 2023/2024, over 12,000 data records and 5,200 photos are already available on the platform. We hope you appreciate the hard work of our team led by Roger Bennet.
